Scholarships

GLBAP awards scholarships to college and alumnae students who are active in their NPC-affiliated sororities and alumnae groups. The outstanding young women who receive GLBAP scholarships have demonstrated excellence in academics, sorority activities, community involvement and other extracurricular pursuits. These scholarships could not be awarded without the support of our donors.

The call for applications takes place in January. The GLBAP Scholarship Committee evaluates each application and all information is kept confidential. The winners receive their awards at our annual Scholarship Banquet held in the spring.

Collegian Scholarship

The Collegian Scholarship is the traditional scholarship that GLBAP awards every year. In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to qualify. In addition to a recommendation letter from a sorority advisor, you may wish to also ask a philanthropic organization to submit information on your service to support the Legacy of Philanthropy Award; if so, please share the Service Recommendation link below with a representative from that group.

Carol Joan “cj” Donovan Legacy of Philanthropy Scholarship

For our 100th anniversary, we renamed the Legacy of Philanthropy Scholarship after Carol Joan “cj” Donovan, a delegate who continues her philanthropic efforts as an alumna. Even within her career, cj focused on service for others as a special education teacher and a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. She has been part of the Greater Long Beach Alumnae Panhellenic for over 25 years. She has held every position, starting with her first presidency in 2002.

Before joining the Greater Long Beach Alumnae Panhellenic, cj continued her leadership in the Long Beach Alumnae chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma as Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Vice President, President, and Panhellenic Representative. Given all her dedication to Sigma Sigma Sigma and Panhellenic, she has been presented with many prestigious national awards, including the Emily Gates Alumnae Achievement Award.

Dorothy “Jan” Jones Alumna Scholarship

Our newest award, the Alumna Scholarship, is named after Dorothy “Jan” Jones, who came to us as an alumna initiate. She did not graduate or attend Cal State Fullerton, but she was initiated at the Cal State Fullerton chapter of Gamma Phi Beta as an Alumna Initiate by her daughter Teresa Haney. As a mother of a Gamma Phi Beta, Jan was very involved in the fundraising and philanthropic efforts of the alumnae chapters, which allowed for a seamless Alumna initiation in 2007.  She was the Gamma Phi Beta Long Beach Alumnae Chapter President from 2010 through 2013 and is now the president again, with her current term starting in 2021. Jan has received many significant awards from her sorority for her service as an alumna initiate, from Panhellenic, and for merit.  She has served on the Gamma Phi Beta Affiliate House Corporation Board for CSULB since 2017. Jan joined Greater Long Beach Panhellenic in 2010 as the Gamma Phi Beta Long Beach Alumnae Chapter delegate and has served with us since. She held all rotational positions and served as president in 2013. She has a natural instinct to help those in need as she is a retired nurse and has a passion for giving back to the community through her work with the Long Beach rescue mission and Long Beach Ronald McDonald House.
