Scholarships

Every year, GLBAP presents scholarships to college students who are active in their NPC-affiliated sororities. Our honors are given to collegians who attend California State University Long Beach OR who graduated from a high school in the greater Long Beach area and attend a college or university elsewhere in the U.S. These scholarships could not be awarded without the support of our wonderful donors.

The GLBAP Scholarship Committee evaluates each application and all information is kept confidential. The winners receive their awards at our annual Scholarship Banquet held in the spring.

Collegian Scholarship

The Collegian Scholarship is our traditional $1,000 scholarship. The outstanding young women who receive GLBAP scholarships have demonstrated excellence in academics, sorority activities, community involvement and other extracurricular pursuits. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to qualify and submit a recommendation letter from a sorority advisor.

Carol Joan “cj” Donovan Legacy of Philanthropy Award

The Legacy of Philanthropy Award is named after Carol Joan “cj” Donovan. This $500 award is presented to collegians who have provided exceptional philanthropic service to their campus and/or community. Undergraduates, third year and above, may apply and will need to submit a recommendation letter from a sorority advisor; an optional letter from a campus or community organization familiar with the applicant is also encouraged.

Carol Joan Donovan focused on service for others as a special education teacher and a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. She has been part of Greater Long Beach Alumnae Panhellenic for more than 25 years and has held every officer position, starting with her first presidency in 2002. Before joining GLBAP, cj continued her leadership in the Long Beach Alumnae chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma as treasurer, recording secretary, vice president, president, and Panhellenic representative. Given her dedication to Sigma Sigma Sigma and Panhellenic, she has been presented with many prestigious national awards, including the Emily Gates Alumnae Achievement Award.

Dorothy “Jan” Jones Alumna Scholarship Award

At our 100th anniversary in 2023, we debuted a scholarship for graduate students named after the late Dorothy “Jan” Jones. GLBAP has recently chosen to modify this award in order to honor area alumnae for their continued service to their sororities and/or Panhellenic. We will publish the new criteria and accept applications in the latter part of 2026 and announce the first winner(s) in 2027.

Jan Jones came to GLBAP as an alumna initiate representing Gamma Phi Beta. She did not attend California State University Fullerton, but was initiated at the CSUF chapter of Gamma Phi Beta as an alumna Initiate by her daughter Teresa Haney. As a mother of a Gamma Phi Beta, Jan was very involved in the fundraising and philanthropic efforts of its alumnae chapters. She served as president of the Gamma Phi Beta Long Beach Alumnae Chapter from 2010 through 2013 and again in 2021. Jan received many significant awards from her sorority for her service. Jan joined GLBAP in 2010, held all rotational officer positions and was president of our chapter in 2013. She was a nurse and had a passion for giving back to the community through her work with the Long Beach rescue mission and Long Beach Ronald McDonald House.
